RECORD DAY'S FIRES

GORSE CHIEF CAUSE

RAILWAY ENGINE FIRES

"This, as far as I can trace, is a brigade record," read, a report of Superintendent J. Creeko to the Fire Board yesterday, to the effect that on Thursday, 28th February, 14 calls to fires were answered. No fewer than 10 of these were to gorse fires, a sure indication of tho unchecked growth of gorse within the city area. Tho superintendent suggested that the City Council be communicated with, so. that some action might be taken to enforce owners of vacant sections to clear gorse and long grass, which constituted a danger to surrounding property. Mr. Dean's motion thalrtlio attention of the City Council bo drawn to the matter, and that it be requested to enforce the bylaw regarding gorse, was carried. Superintendent Crecke said that he liad written to tho managers of the oil stores at Kaiwarra, and to the Eailway Department, pointing out the danger of gorse and fennel growing in the vicinity. He had also pointed out to the Department the danger of sparks from tho engines, in view of the presence of gorse.

It was decided to formally write to the Government Bailway Department, backing up the superintendent's letter.
