UNIVERSITY BEAT PETONE.
One of 'Saturday's closest finishes was that between Petone and University, the latter gaining the needed runs for au outright win within a few minutes .of. the call of time. On the first day 'of play Petone scored 149, in reply to which University put on 87 for the loss of five wickets, Leys and Caldwell being the not-out .men. Continuing their innings, University carried the total to 179 before the last wicket'fell. Favoured by a fast wicket, Hope had a very successful day with the i ball, and took six wickets at a cost of just over a dozen runs , apiece. Petone made the game interesting in the second innings'.when it might easily have remained as it had stood at the end of the first innings. Brice opened the home team's, second innings with M. Nicholls, and set the example of hitting out lustily. Patrick also hit hard.for 39, and Bundle and H. E. Nieholls also reached double figures. With .about an ,hour left -for play, Petone declared the innings closed, after making 135 for five wickets. University required 100 to win, and, chiefly owing to a forceful innings for 52 by Caldwell, obtained the runs just on time for the loss. of. four wickets, the last wicket-fall-ing after the rims had been scored. Hope again bowled well for Petone, taking four' wickets for 40 runs. Details: — PETONE. Fust innings .149 Second Innings. ,M. Nicholls, b Tripe 1 W. S. Brice, c and b Tripe . 45 ./.
