WELLINGTON AND HUTT.
The Hutt-Wellington match was in an interesting position for the second day's play, Hutt having made 258 in their first innings and Wellington 169 for five wickets. Robertson, who had batted well for Wellington on the first day and was not out with 58, added only one run to his score when the match was resumed at Kelburn Park, an appeal for lbw going against him. Morgan, also carrying on from the first day, met a similar fate, and Wellington's prospects looked dull with seven wickets down for 174 runs. Hyder was then .given a chance to do some hitting, and he used it to such purpose that he brought Wellington within reach of.. victory. Duff and Ellerra in turn held their end up while Hyder went for the bowling. When he connected properly the ball usually made a quick pasasge to the boundary, and three big hits realised six apiece. It was from one of M'Girr's overs that he hit two 6's, and in attempting another he just failed to clear the playing area, and was caught near the boundary. Hyder's hard hitting was entertaining and it led to an exciting finish. When Cousins joined Ellerm for the last wicket Wellington's score was 26 shortof that made by Hutt, but the last two held out and, amidst excitement gave their side the lead. There was a narrow escape, however, when Cousins gave a fieldsman a hard chance, Wellington then requiring three runs to tie on the first innings; Wellington finished up with 268 and, the match'being decided on the .first innings, they won by ten runs. Rooertson's score included two O's and five 4'b, "and Hyder hit three 6's and five 4's. Although some of his- deliveries were severely dealt with by Hyder, M'Girr bowled really well, finishing up with six wickets for 97 runs. Watson and Warnes took the other wickets, and Aldersley's turn for success came in the second innings when he took four for 52. Hutt's second innings was mainly a practice for the colts, of whom Birch and Biggar did best. The efforts of these two were not sup-, ported, and but for a good showing by Aldersley the 'innings would have been poor. One of the best of the colts, Ross, was absent. Birch's score of 00 included seven 4's, and there were five 4's in Biggar's contribution of 40. Aldersjey (41)
scored mainly in 4's of which he registered nine. Cousins was again on the job with the ball, and gained the distinction of performing the "hat trick," a wicket from the last, ball of one over being followed with two wickets off the first and second balls of the next over. The feature of Wellington's second innings was an excellent display by Airey. Batting at his best lie made 78 runs, his scoring efforts including two o's and twelve '4's. His performance provided an excellent finishing touch to a thoroughly interesting match. Details:— . .. ■ ■ WELLINGTON. First Innings.
