OLD BOYS DEFEAT INSTITUTE.
With the last man in and what Was probably the final over-' the day half-finish-ed, Reynolds cut a fast ball from Massey square to the fence and gave Old Boys a victory by four runs on the first innings over Institute in a match that was full of interest from the start to the very exciting finish. When the game was commenced on the Hutt Ground on the previous Saturday, Institute batted throughout the afternoon for 323 runs for the loss of seven wickets. Dempster declared the innings closed, and when play was resumed at the Basin Reserve on Saturday Old Boys were at the crease all the afternoon, and, as indicated above, snatched a narrow victory in the last few minutes. -.....•.■•-•..-.. .:'■ ■. ■'• '..
Parsloe and Elliott were the opening pair and faced the bowling of Massey and Henderson. Parsloe soon got to work and sent twenty up in as many minutes off his own bat. The scoring continued at a steady rate with Elliott contributing his share, but with the score at 83 a smart return by Foley saw him run out in attempting a risky single. The partner-
ship had lasted an hour and fifteen minutes. Lamason filled tho vacancy, but soon lost Parsloe, who ..rod on his wicket in stepping:back to one of Foley's slows. Badcock came in and another good stand followed.' The batsmen-lost ,no. opportunity of collecting singles, and their running between the wickets brightened the game considerably. Once again two wickets fell in quick succession, and with, the total at 151 Lambert and James were to; gether, and they carried on so successfully that well over 100 runs were added before James rather recklessly tried to piiU a good length ball from Massey and was clean bowled. The pair scored very evenly, their totals mounting almost run by run. Lambert was the first to reach the half-century, but James quickly followed. , For the. first half-hour or so they were content mainly to play themselves in, but they opened out on the bowling after the tea* adjournment, which was taken with the score at 164. James hit tho only: six of the match by pulling a leg ball, from Henderson over the fence in front of the grandstand: Aitken, the Institute wicketkeeper, received a painful knock when James swung round to leg and connected with one of Foley S breaks. With only five wickets down for 269 and three-quarters of an hour left to play, Old Boys appeared to have a fangrip on the game, but the dismissal of Lambert was quickly followed by that of Barclay, Browne, and Binnie, and there were still 45 runs wanted, when Robinson joined Reynolds with less than half an hour remaining. It was rather an ordeal for Robinson, playing his first senior game, to face Massey and Henderson in the failing light, but neither he nor Reynolds appeared to be worried, and they provided some of the best batting of the day, eventually passine Institute's total. They were given a rousing- ovation in which none joined less heartily than the Institute players, as they made their way to the pavilion. '■■-.• , =. As usual, Massey: and Henderson were the mainstay of the Institute bowling, sending down 28.5 and 30 overs respectively.. Massey met with the most success, taking five wickets,' as against Henderson's tw.o. Very few maidens were bowled, Massey pending down two, and Henderson, four. • ' : .Details:—. INSTITUTE.
