OLD BOYS AND WELLINGTON.

Having the first use of the wicket, Old Boys ran up the substantial total of 346 in their first innings against Wellington played on the Basin Reserve. Batting was rather slow early in the afternoon, l^it after the tea adjournment Browne and James livened up the game, and put on 100 runs in less than an hour. Hid-dleston-was the star bowler of the day, taking nine wickets for 116. Old Boys' opening pair Parslow and Bull remained at the crease for a good half hour, but when the partnership was broken only 21 runs were on the board. Lambert then partnered Bull, and although the runs came in slowly 61 were added for the second wicket. When Lambert had reached his half-century Bull was sent to the pavilion by an lbw decision, and was replaced by Browne. Old Boys' total increased steadily, and at the tea adjournment 122 runs had been recorded. When play was resumed both players opened out and scored several fours. Lambert was dismissed after contributing a valuable total of 86, and Badcock lost the next wicket in attempting to reach the boundary. Unfortunately he missed the ball, and Hiddleston added another wicket to his large bag. Some interesting play was witnessed during the Browne-James partnership, and when the former batsman was dismissed the total score had reached 232. Shortly afterwards James fell to an lbw decision with 53 runs to his credit. Patrick, in partnership with Lamason, did some big scoring off Hiddleston, taking 15 runs in one over and two sixes in successive overs. His smashing play could not last for long, however, and he soon fell a victim to Hiddleston's steady bowling. Nine runs were secured by Barclay before he was also sent to the pavilion by Hiddleston Elliot, who replaced Barclay, did not last for long, and was dismissed lbw by Morgan. The last partnership between Bennie and Lamason terminated, a few minutes before 7 o'clock, when the latter batsman was clean bowled by Hiddleston.
