HUTT UNIVERSITY.

Two of the Hutt colts, Ross and Biggar, are proving themselves to be a fine opening pair, and they accounted for another good first-wicket stand in Hutt's innings against University at the Hutt Recreation Ground on Saturday. The runs did not come at a fast rate, but there was a steady advance against a varied attack. Good fielding helped to keep the runs down, and, except for a few mistakes, University's work in the field was the best seen on the ground this season, with M'Leod and Bailey performing conspicuously. The Biggar-Ross partnership was not broken until 73 runs had been scored, Biggar then being caught and bowled by Hollings after having made 35 runs. His scoring efforts in a sound display included six 4's. The second wicket, with Ross and Birch associated, presented n even more difficult problem for University, although Ross gave one chance just after he had passed the half-century mark. Sound play was the order, and when the opportunity offered, anything loose was dealt with as it should be. From 100 the pair went on to register a century partnership, and Ross achieved the distinction of scoring the first century for Hutt this seasou. After that a brisker pace was set in run-getting, Ross, in particular, battingfreely. His excellent display came to an end when he was run out, after having contributed the.. big score of 157, and played a big hand in putting on 189 runs for the scond wicket. Ross ■ was at the wickets for about three arid a-half hours. His score included twenty-six 4's, and the manner in which he scored most of them was really fine, as he had to beat a keen set of fieldsmen. There were occasions, as previously stated, when University misfielded, but on the whole their work was good. Towards the close of the day's play Hutt went hard for runs, and as a result subsequent wickets were not so hard' to get. Birch, after making 66, including ten 4's, skied a ball from Greig and was caught. M'Girr, who compiled a breezy 28, went in the same way. Lees and Aldersley did not last long, and when stumps were drawn Hutt had the respectable tally of 322 runs for six wickets. Nine of the University players were tried with the ball, Greig, Vietmeyer, and Hollings getting wickets. Details: — HUTT. First Innings.
