Baker (Midland) '1 for 54 Fairly solid scoring, was the order in local senior cricket matches on Saturday afternoon. The weather was fine, but the wickets and outfield had not fully recovered from the drenching received on the two previous days. Batsmen generally found conditions easy, 1 but there were some in: stances of effective bowling, J. 'S. Hiddleston making a notable achevement on the Basin Reserve by taking nine wickets. In this match, Old Boys v. Wellington, first use of the wicket was made by Old Boys, and they performed well in compiling 346 runs against the championship leaders. Lambert, Browne, James, Barclay, Bull, and Patrick were all in run-getting mood. Playing against Kilbirnie, at Kilbirnie, the Institute seniors started well in changing their batting order. Dempster went in after a good score had been made, and he then did most of the scoring. A splendid display on his part realised 139 runs, this being his fourth three-figure score in senior cricket this season. Institute's total was 328, and, in reply, Kilbirnie made 43 runs for the loss of one wicket. Hutt made an excellent start against University at the Hutt Recreation Ground, a iine secondwicket partnership being largely responsible for the big tally made by Hutt. Ross was in excellent form, and, by sound cricket, he reached the century mark, afterwards batting with much freedom to put on over 50 more runs. He was ably assisted by other young players in Biggar and Birch. The latter end of the day's play was marked by spirited batting, Hutt finishing up with 322 for six wickets. Petone fared moderately well against Mid- ■ land at Petone, Cleverly, and Baker doing good work in the Midland attuck. In reply Midland had made 70 runs for three wickets when stumps were drawn for the day. INSTITUTE AND KILBIRNIE. Institute's first innings against Kilbirnie at Kilbirnie Park on Saturday occupied nearly the whole of the afternoon. The last wicket fell at 6.5 p.m. for a total of 328 runs, to which Dempster had contributed 139. Wellington then batted, and had lost one wicket for 43 runs on the call of time. Banks and Crook opened for Institute to the bowling of Hearne and Tucker. Both batsmen were cautious, the score mounting slowly with many singles. Banks was the first to go, being run' out for 19. Crook continued steadily with Burt. The latter was rather more forceful, hitting boundaries at intervals. Crook's wicket fell to Tucker with the score at 56, and Bilby came on. With Burt he increased the pace, and when Burt was caught out by Sutherland the total stood at 117. Dempster was the next man, and he and Bilby settled down to a steady rate of scoring. They took no unnecessary risks, but let no opportunities go by. Bilby, after being at the crease for about an hour, was bowled by W. Chxistophei'son for 54, the day's top score, excluding Dempster's. At Bilby's dismissal a rot set in. Aitken.. Prince, Bryant, Rogers, and Fortune all went cheaply, the score being kept moving almost solely by Dempster. Dempster was unlucky in not being able to carry his bat, for it was not until the closing partnership with Henderson that his wicket fell to Hcarnel

Kilbirnie, commencing their first innings, •an up 43 runs in about as many minutes

for the loss of one wicket, Greig allowing himself to be run out just on the call of time. Details:— INSTITUTE. First Innings.
