ST. HELENS HOSPITAL

RETIREMENT OF MATRON Miss IT. E. Newman, who has been matron of the St. Helens Hospital, Wellington, for tho past six years, and a member of the nursing staff of tho' Department of Health for eighteen years, is retiring from the service at the end of this month. A number of her friends, including many fellow-officers and exstu lents, met at the hospital on Tuesday to bid her farewell in her present position, and to make her a presentation, in appreciation of the valuable services she had Tendered during her term of office. The Hon. J. A. Young, Minister of Health, presented Miss Newman with an address bound in a leather booklet with a handsome handbag and a substantial cheque. The address, to which many signatures were attached, expressed regret at her retirement, acknowledged tho prominent part Miss Newman had taken in nursing matters, and testified to the efficiency with which sho had carried out her duties, and won the esteem of all with whom she had come in contact. The Minister spoke of what Miss Newman's work and care had meant to numerous mothers in Wellington, and of the inspiring influence she had had on the nursing profession. Addresses of appreciation of Miss Newman's work were also made by Dr. Agnes Bennett, medical superintendent of the hospital, and Miss Lambie, of the Health Department. Amongst those present were Miss J. Bicknell, director Division of Nursing, Miss Hester Maclean, Miss J. Moore, Mis? Inglis (secretary of the New Zealand Nurses' Association), Miss Morgan (matron of the Alexandra Home), and many others. Dr. Valintine, Director-General of Health, who was unable to be present, wrote adding his tribute to Miss Nowman 's services. Miss Newmau in returning thanks said although retiring from her position at the hospital, she still hoped to take an active interest in the nursing profession.
