RUGBY

PONEKE CLUB The Poneke Rugby Football Club's annual social function, held in the Basin Reserve Pavilion on Saturday uiglit, was largely attended, those present including Mr. N. M'Kenzie and several members of the Hawkes Bay team and the Grey town juniors. Mr. A. Wiren was in the chair, Mr. S. S. Dean, the president, being out of town. The chairman and other speakers congratulated the club upon its successes during the season. The senior team had finished up in second place, the championship being won by University. Mr. Wiren also congratulated the latter club on its success. So far as the Poneke senior team was concerned no small measure of credit for the good showing was due to the coaches, Messrs. A. J. Griffiths and W. J. Wallace. The club's junior team had won the championship of its grade. Medals for players who had performed with distinction in the various grades were presented as follow: Senior: Most improved player, W. Barrett; best back, L. Elliott; best forward, J. Shearer. Junior: Best forward, T. Cricliton; best back, F. Lamberg. Third: Best back, H. Hayman; best forward, h. Reid. Intermediate: Best back, H. 3reen all; best forward, J. Norris; Fourth: Best forward, T. Maddock; best back, K. Temple. Fifth: Best forward, K. M'Gregor; best back, H. Bacon. The toast list was as follows: "The King," Mr. A. Wiren (past president); "Poneke Club," Mr. A. Wiren, responded to by Messrs. J. Shearer and J. Clarke; "Kindred Clubs," Mr. A. J. Griffiths; "W.R.F.U.," Mr. B. Calcinai, responded to by Mr. A. J. Griffiths; "Referees and St. John Ambulance," Mr. T. R. Booker; "The Ladies," Mr. J. M'Arthur; "The Press," Mr. P. R. Laurenson. There were also other speakers. The evening's enjoyment was added to by a progamme of items, the contributors being Messrs. Parkes, Warren, R. Rigby, G. Tynan, Rowarth. Hull, and Paterson.
