NEW AMERICAN LINER.

A contract for the largest ship ever built in an American shipyard was let by'the International Mercantile Marine Company on 7th July with the Newport News Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Company, states "Falrplay." The vessel will be 612 ft overall, with an 82ft beam and a displacement of 35,000 tons. She will be a turbo-electric liner capable of making 18 knots, and will be operated by tho Panama Pacific Lino between Now York and San Francisco. The liner will be the third of three ships which are to be run in this intorcoastal trade The California is now in service, while the Virginia is under construction at the Newport News yard. The third liner, which will be larger than the first two ships, will not bo ready for servico before late In 1929 or early in 1930. Tho Shipping Board will lend a considerable part of the money needed for tho construction of the third ship to the I.M.M. Company. ....
