ATLANTIC MAIL CONTRACTS.
Some foreign critics, especially In America, arc fond of alluding to what they are pleased to term the State subsidies received by British steamship companies, states the "Syren and Shipping." The truth is, or courso, that the alleged subsidies are, in fact, merely payments for services rendered in tho conveyance of malls. In the North Atlantic trado tho payments mado by the Government have long been on too low a scale, and the .White Star and Cunard Lines are to be congratulated lv that the authorities have revised them In an upward direction, the former company's payment being raised from £78,000 to £100 000 and tho latter's from £65,300 to £100,000. These additions aro made in view of the large increase in the mails and in tho cost of their conveyance.
