LIQUOR AND REVENUE

Under the heading "Misleading Cable Aews' Mr. J. Maltoa Murray refers to a cablegram published this week statin-* that thirsty Americans had spent so much on liquor under Government control m Ontario that for the first time in twenty years that province had been able to balance its budget. Mr. Murray writes: J-he Canadian financial year ends like our own, on 31st March, therefore Ontario s budget would be balanced on that date, while the province was still under provincial Prohibition. Government sale ot liquor did not commence till 15th Alay this year, so whatever thirsty Americans may have spent there since it would have nothing to do with the balanced budget. Mr. Murray also refers to the increase in public debt in British Columbia and Quebec in disproof of the contention that the sale of liquor helps a community to solve its financial problems.
