ROUGH SOUTHERN TRIPS

CHRISTCHURCH, 19th June. Steamers arriving .at Lyttelton to-day met an exceptionally strong southerly gale with heavy seas. The weather is bitterly cold, sl^et and snow falling. All vessels were severely buffeted ' by tremendous \head seas. The ferry steamer Manuka did not arrive'until 1 o'clock. She met the full violence of the gale until off Kaikoura, • after which she made better time. The cargo steamer Foyle arrived in the afternoon, after' a passage of 25 hours from Wellington.
