PERSONAL MATTERS

The Postmaster-General (the lion, W. Nosworthy) returned from Ashburton this morning.

The Minister of Industries and Commerce (the Hon. A. D. M'Leod) left for Dunedin last night, at the invitation of the Manufacturers' Association, to inspect the principal'industries. On the return journey .he will make a similar inspection at Christchurch. He expects to return to Wellington on 12th February.

The Acting-Minister of Eailways (the Hon. F. J. Bolleston) left for Auckland this afternoon to open the new railway overbridge at Newmarket. He will probably return to Wellington on Monday.

The Minister of Labour, Mines, and Marine (the Hon. G. J. Anderson) returned this morning from Taltaka, in the Nelson district.

The Minister of Education (the Hon. B. A. Wright) will leave for Nelson tomorrow evening to open the Auckland Point new school and also to visit other schools in the Nelson district. He will return to Wellington on Friday next.

Mr. A. Hamilton, M.P., was a passenger by the Wahine from Lyttelton this morning.

Mr. W. K. Andrews, of the staff-of the Wellington Magistrate's Court, has been appointed associate to Mr. Justice Reed.

The appointment of Signor Miehele Blunno as Consul o£ Italy at "Wellington'is recognised provisionally by the Governor-General in a "Gazette" notice published last night.

The Mayor (Mr. C. B. Norwood) and Councillors H. D. Bennett and M. F. Luekie were last evening appointed to represent the City Council on the Wellington Fire Board.

Mr. A. L. M. Willis, who has been superintendent of the radio station at Chatham Islands for the past four years, has arrived in Wellington and will shortly take charge of the local radio station.

The City Council, upon the motion of the Mayor, last evening passed a vote of condolence and sympathy with Mr. M. Cohen, chairman of the Wellington Harbour Board, in the loss of his wife.

The Eev. Father H. M'Donnell, of St. Patrick's College, has been appointed to the House of Studies at Highden, near Palmerston North. He will be succeeded by the Eev. Father H. Seymour.

The Mayor (Mr. C. B. Norwood) will represent the Wellington City Council at the Tramways Conference to be held at Palmerstou North on Tuesday next. Mr. Norwood and Councillor M'Keen will represent the council at the Municipal Conference.

Major H. D. M'Hugh, of Timaru, has been transferred to Invercargill as staff officer in charge of Eegimental District No. 12. Captain A. S. Hooper, of the Wiltshire Eegiment, at present Adjutant of the First Canterbury Eegiment, will succeed Major M'Hugh as area officer at Timaru, and Captain W. Murphy will take the place of Captain Hooper.

Mr. W. Marsh, of the staff at EadioAivanui, has arrived in Wellington to take up the position of third radio inspector, District Telegraph Engineer's office, in pursuance of the Department's policy of increasing the number of such positions. Mr. and Mrs. Marsh and family made the whole of the 700-mile journey from the Par North -wireless station to Wellington by motor-car.

The deatbf took place at Masterton on Wednesday o£ Mr. James Bobieson, in his 89th year. The deceased gentleman was very well known in the Wairar'apa district, having arrived there in 1858, although ho came to New Zealand from London about eight years earlier. He married a daughter of the late Mr. A. W. Benall, who died in 1887. Out of a family of thirteen, eleven are still living. The first red deer in the Wairarapa were liberated by the late Mr. Eobieson.

Mr. Cuthbert East, who leaves the editorship of the "Wanganui Chronicle" to take control of the "Weekly Press," was farewelled last night by a representative gathering of citizens (states a Press Association telegram from Wanganui). .. The Mayor, Mr. Hope Gibbons, on behalf of the business and professional men, made presentations to Mr. and Mrs.' East, and tributes were paid to Mr. East's able journalism and. to his services to the community. Mr P. A. Young, stores manager at the headquarters of the Union Steam bhip Company, has retired on superannuation, after forty-six years' service Mr. Young was farewellea. by fellowmembers of the staff yesterday afternoon and was presented with a platinum wristlet watch and a wallet of notes. The presentation was made by Mr. B. A. Aiken, general manager, who referred to Mr. Young's sterling qualities and his long and loyal service. Mr. Young feelingly replied, expressing his appreciation of the gifts and kindly sentiments. Mr. Young . is well known throughout the Dominion and Australia and during his service with the Union Steam Ship Company was sent Home to superintend the fitting-out of'the'MoIcoia, Mapourika, Moeraki, Manuka. Maunganui, "Wanine, and Niagara.
