ISLAND BAY ELECTORS
MEETING OF ASSOCIATION.
Tbe monthly meeting of the executive of the Island Bay Electors' Association was held in the Bowling Club's pavilion last /.Thursday. Mr. E. J. Colley occupied the chair in the absence of the president, Mr. A. H. Clarke. There was a good attendance of members, and a deputation from the Civic League—Mrs. Moore, Messrs. Whittaker, M'Laren, and Downes—attended by invitation. To provide en opportunity for City Councillors to discuss important matters concerning the bay with the local association and with the deputation from the Civic League, invitations had been sent to the councillors to be present. Apologies, however, were received from the Hon. E. A. Wright and Messrs. M'Keen, Aston, and Thompson, and it was noted with regret that no councillor was present The question of sewage drainage at Island Bay was dealt with by Mr. R. Sinel, who said that during southerly weather the drainage "backed up" and deposited sewage matter in any low-lying properties along the Parade. As it was an urgent matter it was resolved to write to the authorities concerned asking that immediate steps be taken to prevent a recurrence of the trouble. Mr. T. G. Ricketts presented the progress report of the Playing Area Sub-com-mittee, which recommended that the order for the equipment should be given to the English firm, in preference to the tenders of American and New Zealand firms. The report was adopted, and the Director of Reserves is to be asked to have the playing area site prepared. It is expected 'that the equipment will be erected within six months. Mr. D. M'Laren gave a brief outline of the Civic League's policy concerning local associations, and two other members, Messrs. More and Hunt, spoke along the same lines with, special reference to the proposed erection of a wharf at Fisher man's Creek Many speakers took part in the discussion which followed, and the opinon was freely expressed that wholehearted sup. port should be given to the island bridge proposition, which would solve all the present troubles and all that.were likely in the future. The following motion: "That the suggested plan of erecting the necessary accommodation on the island and of giving communication from the mainland by means of a bridge be. supported" was enthusiastically carried ■ ■ ■ It was decided that the -Civic League should take up the matter of present methods of showing tram destinations with the City Council. A letter is to be sent to the City Council congratulating its officers and men upon the highly efficient manner in which the Parade is being bituminised. Thirty-seven new members, to the association were reported.
