At the opening of the defence in th« Kalgoorlie murder trial, Mr. Haynes, representing the accused, said that both" the deceased detectives, "Walsh and Pitman, were shot by Treffene; that Coulter was not there when they were shot, and would produce evidence to bear thu out; also that the detectives were shot under circumstances which would entitle Treffene to an acquittal.
The third party in the case, Evan Clarke, an hotel licensee, declared in King's evidence, that Coulter told him that the detectives came upon him and Treffeno while they were carrying a load of stolen gold-bearing ore into th« bush.
