NEW HOSPITAL

TIME NOT CONSTDEEED OPPOBTUNE.

Correspondence has been passing between the Eastbourne and Lower Hutt Borough Councils in regard to hospital matters, the subject having arisen as a result of'the increasing levies of the Wellington Hospital Board. The local bodies concerned for some time have been dissatisfied with the amounts they are called upon to pay each year, and recently they have been considering the possibilities of erecting a hospital for the Hutt Valley. At last evening's meeting of the Eastbourne Council, a letter was received, stating that at a meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council, held last Monday, a resolution was passed to the effect that the time had arrived when an up-to-date hospital should be provided for the use of residents of the Hutt Valley, and in this direction the council asked the Eastbourne Borough Council to give an expression of feeling in the direction of indicating what course it considers would be best to adopt in bringing this matter to a finality.

\"I have made some inquiries in regard to the matter," said the Mayor, "and it is difficult to obtain sufficient data. Dr. Valintine has reported against more hospitals, believing in centralisation. The cost of a new hospital would be excessive, and I think that the letter will have to be received in the meantime."

Councillor Levy said it would probabty cost double, and perhaps treble, to build a new hospital, compared with the costs of a few years ago. The position was entirely different today to what it was three years ago, when the roada were in a shocking state.

A resolution was carried that the letter be received, and that the Lower Hutt Borough Council be informed that the present time is not considered opportune for the erection of a new hospital for the Hutt Valley.
