TROTTING NOTES

(By "Vedette.")

The annual meeting of the InTercargill Trotting Club will be held next Friday and Saturday.

The next North Island fixture is that of the Hawkes Bay Trotting Club on 30th January.

At the Auckland Meeting there was an example of changing gear which was quite unknown to the public, and resulted in a winner at a handsome price. The way was made easy by the fact that there were two unhoppled races on the programme, one for unhoppled horses, pacers and trotters, and one for unhoppled trotters only. The horse in question was started as a pacer, but ran poorly. Next time he was geared up and weighted to trot, with the result that he went very nicely, and won at a handsome price. The public were not advised that some very vital changes had been made regarding his gear, for it has been ruled that such changes between races is quite in order. Although there is no suggestion of fraud, tlie possibilities are gTeat, and in the interests of trotting control it is to be hoped that this matter is reopened by the Trotting Association.

A start has been made at Alexandra Park with the work of forming a sand track.

W. Evans intends to leave Moko Chief with P. Green until the end of the season.

Wallroon, who won a couple of races for P. Rogers, including the Waikato Cup, is now in J. Shaw's stable, and is a regular worker at Epsom. At the last moment Mr. R. C. Simp son, who returned to Sydney on Friday by the Maunganui, decided not to take Don Douglas back with him, and the Don Pronto horse is still at Epsom. Hi; raced free-legged at the Cup Meetiug, but since then has been jogged out vith the straps on by A. Brown.

Machine Brickj Flying Machine, and Machine Gun are being looked after r.t Epsom by W. Dean until Mr. J. B. Sheahan returns from Sydney. He _ left Auckland last week with Auto Machine on the Maunganui. This year the Taranaki Trotting Club has increased the stakes for its one-day meeting, to be held on Saturday, 27th February, by £305, making in all £1050 for its eight events. The club will race on the Taranaki Jockey Club's course, which, with its stabling and up-to-date appointments, has been placed at the Trotting Club's disposal. Nominations close on 12th February.
