WELLINGTON EAST
MR. MONTEITH AT VICTORIA HALL
: .Mr. A. L. Monteith, M.P., Labour candidate for Wellington East, spoke at Victoria Hall last' evening. There was a large i.ttendance. Mr."'Monteith began '• by alluding to the steady and growing increase of the Labour Party during recent years. He said that the national outlook in New Zealand was not a healthy one at the moment, and in proof of that alluded to the unsatisfactory flotation of the recent loan. All the evils of the Old Land on a small scale were being continued in this country, simply because' the lands of New Zealand were not being opened. The incidence of taxation was grossly unfair. New Zealand had the lowest basic wage in Australasia. Mr. Monteith spoke on lines similar to those of his previous addresses, dealing with the basic'wage,-housing,-the 7s-6d dispute, and concluded with an appeal - for support of the Labour Party in order that humanitarian legislation might be put on the Statute Book. ■
At the conclusion of his address Mr. Monteith was accorded a vote of thanks and confidence.
