NELSON NEWS

(from ods own correspondent.) NELSON, 27th August. From small beginning* and as the relult of the energy and enthusiasm of a few, the Nelson Rock Garden Society to-day has a very large membership, including residents of various parts of the Dominion, who, by correspondence, keep in close touch with the operations of the society. If one may judge from the complimentary and appreciative letters so frequently received by the secretary, Mr. A. Wilkinson, this cult is lively to enjoy a very much wider popularity. The society here has largely devoted its attention to the construction of a rock garden on the side of the Church Hill, adjacent to the Nelson Bowling Green, and has succeeded in adding another beauty spot to the city's many attractions. An extension of this garden' has lately been, taken in hand, and is now completed and planted, and it is hoped that the City Council will agree to a further extension to the end of the section next autumn. A proposal is being brought forward at the meeting next Tuesday to alter the name to "The New Zealand Alpine Garden I Society." The. native section for New Zealand alpines is growing fast, thanks to generous help from all sotirces, and now that the society has a promise of help from Dr. Cockayne, it is very certain that an extension will be required.. On Wednesday the society despatched four cases of Lelmesias to the Dominion Exhibition, and more supplies of natives from this district are to follow. During the last week intimation has come through in letters that six persons interested are coming to Nelson for a holiday to see work done—two each from Hawera, Harelock North, and Wellington. The following team has been chosen to play for the Seddon Shield in the challenge match against Marlborough at Blenheim on Saturday :—Full-back Glover; three-quarters, White, Woolfe, Snodgrass; five-eighths, Reed, Guy; half, R. Garviu; forwards, Young (wing), W. Snow, Toon, G. Challies, Barrett, Everett, Baldwin, Kinzett; emergencies, Wallace, phoney. Bette,
