THE COMPETITIONS
AN ENTERTAINING PROGRAMME LAST EVENING'S FINALS. Again last evening a very entertaining programme of finals was presented by the Competitions Society at the Town Hall. The chief item was the piano solo, for competitors from 13 to. 15 years of age, for the society's scholarship I the judge expressed himself as very well pleased with the performances given, and, indeed, the standard of performance in all items was very satisfactory. Following are the results :— _ Piano Solo, society's;scholarship; 13 to 15 years.—Final : Miss Jean Nichol, 205 points, 1; Miss Ormi- Eeid, 184 points, 2; Miss M. Alexander (Palmerston North), 177 points, 3. | _ Baritone or Bass Solo, own selection* —Final: Mr. C. Catton (Napier), 80 points, 1; Mr. A. Flanagan (Lower Hutt), 79 points, 2; Mr. G. H. Neel, 78 points, 3. Boys' Song, 12 and under 16 j own selection.—Final : Master Wallis Brown, 86 points, 1; Master K. Henshaw (Mastertonj, 81 points. 2; Master K. Wilson, 80 points, 3. Junior Test ilecital,. girls under 12.— Final : Miss Joyce Dinnison, 86 points, 1; Miss Kathleen Read (Chrißtchurch), 85 points, 2j Miss Jean Coker, 84 points, Scottish Song, folk or traditional; ladies.—Final : Miss Mona Carrick (Lower Hutt), 85 points, 1; Miss Jeannette Briggs, 84 points,. 2; Miss M. Lunan and Mrs. C. P. Mercer (Dannevirke), 82 points, 3, equal. Highly commended : Mesdames H. Mapleston, C. Goldsmith (Heretauuga), and W. J. Frew, Misses Eileen Kimbell (Lower Hutt), M. Allwnes (Wanganui), Essie Milner (Stratford), E. Skurr (Christchurch}, A. White (New Plymouth), and Isa M Laren._^ Recital, wivu musical accompaniment, boy or girl, under 16 j own selection.— Final: Miss Molly Evans (Petone), 85 points. 1 j Miss Sinclair Breen, 83 points, 2; Miss Evelyn Wright, 82 points, 3. Highly commended : Misses Esme Evan* (Christchurch), Zelma Oafroll (Masterton), Mavis Windsor, Master L. Shepherd. - Boy's Song, 12 and under 16^ - Shipi of Yule." Final: Master Ronald Foster (Christchurch), 84 points, lj Master K. Henshaw (Masterton), 82 points, 2; Master J. Withers, 81 points, 3. Highly commended : Masters K. Wilton and E. Hick'ey. Dialogue, boys and-or girls, under 12, in costume.—Final : Misses T. Lloyd and Isabel Lewi's (Lower *Hutt), 84 points, 1; Misses Queenie M'Lean and May Martin, ,83 points, 2; Misses Ismay M'llroy and Beryl Mulcahy, 82 points, 3. Highly commended : Misses Jean Coker .and Madge Castle. . There were only two entries in the children's chorus for State school choirs, but only the Solway School (Masterton) choir took part. They were awarded the shield, with 143 points.
