'VARSITY v. WAKATU.
The heavy condition. of the ground at Newtown Park did not prevent 'Varsity and Wakatu, who met there, from providing a hard and fast game. Wakatu attacked from the bully-off, but good work by Cousins and Lewis broke up their passing movements. Near the end
of the first spell Wakatu made a deter- ' mined rush, and carried play into the Collegians' twenty-five. W. Hood secured, and sent in a hard angle shot, which beat Atkinson, the 'Varsity . goalie. Wakatu 1, 'Varsity 0. Just before the ■whistle sounded for the interval, A. Cousins, who was playing a great game, evened the scores by a good .goal from a meelee in front of the Wakatu goalmouth. Wakatu 1, 'Varsity. 1. In the second half, scarcely had play commenced than 'Varsity had placed two more goals to their credit, from the sticks of Cousins and Lewis. 'Varsity 3, Wakatu 1. The 'Varsity forwards now had the upper hand, and continuously .broke through the Wakatu •defence. Clever back play by Lawrie, Hollings; Frances, and Haine enabled 'Varsity fco add their fourth goal. "Wakatu were unable to net, and the game ended shortly afterwards with. 'Varsity winning by the odd goal in five.
Mr. Webber was the referee.
