STEAMER IN DISTRESS

ffi wireless message was received at 8.4 to'clock this ■•morning by the Secretary of thVG.P.O. (Mr. E. B. Morris) from the steamer Mindini, stating that at 5.20 a.m. to-day the vessel, was ir senous distress on. Mellish Reef, "off the Brigbane coast, and required urgent assistance.
. A^later message intimated that the' radio station at Townsville (Queensland) ,was aware of the ship's plight.
The Mindini, which is a steel screw steamer-0f'2065 .tons gross register, was built in" 1905, arid is owned by Burns, Philp,:arid"Co. 'She is a.passenger vessel,, anjl is ifeifgaged' in the service between Sydney <and' the Solomon • Islands. SEe left Sydney on the 6th February for the Solomon'lslands; and .'was due back at Sydney yesterday;; ■ She' was almost sure toVbe carrying passengers at the time of the mishap.': The Mindini was formerly known, as^the Iberia. Her principal dimensions Ire: Length 280 ft, breadth' 39 ft,r depth 18ft.
