,THE GOVERNMENT'S PROPOSALS

ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETIES TO BE CONSULTED.

' No long ago much was said about the ravages, of.,deer, and an assurance was giyen that the Government would seriously consider the matter. Recent proclamations authorising the limited killing ■of deer by sportsmen have given rise to a'suggestion that nothing drastic will be done to meet the serious complaints. This is not so. The matter is now under consideration and definite action will be announced soon. Until tha. plans for reducing herds are, approved in consultation with acclimatisation socities the old system will continue.

The Minister of Internal Affairs, the' Hon. W. D'ownie 'Stewart, stated to-day that, the heads.of the, Forestry Service, Lands Department, Tourist Department, Agricultural /Department and Internal Affair's Department, recently conferred oh *the subject of- depredations by deer herlds, and' came to certain conclusions .which will be submitted to a conference of- representatives of Acclimatisation Societies. The Minister proposes to call thei; conference before the end of the present month. He stated that he realised the importance of preventing further destruction by deer, and he expected that, as <a result .of the coming conference, effective steps would be evolved to put a stop to the, trouble. . .
