VARSITY DEFEATS OLD BOYS.
Early in the game between Old Boys and 'Varsity at Petone to-day,' Old Boys had two chances of gpaling from penalties. Gibson first and then M'Coll missed easy kicks, and 'Varsity came away. Trapski, however, failed to pass, and Old Boy's retaliated, Gibson intercepting. Once more' a penalty was ordered, and again Gibson went .wide.Immediately Murray started a passing rush, arid Siddells made a lot of ground until tackled by Malcolm. He passed to Aitken, vjjho passed forward when; in a ■ scoring" position. Siddells ■went over .immediately afterwards, and Aitken goaled. 5-0. The next try was a pretty one. Siddells passed to Aitken, who crossed the line and' scored. Mackay's kick hit the post. 8-0. Aitken got the next try after a good run following a pass from Siddells. Mackay again hit the post. 11-0. Malfroy cut in prettily from a pass from Smith, and Mackay goaled. 16-0. Another penalty come to Old Boys, and Malcolm, from a long way out, sent the ball just under ,the bar. Aitken, who was having a field day, potted a goal from a pass from Murray. 20-0. Malfroy opened the next movement, the' ball, went to Murray, to Siddells, to Jackson, to Scott, who scored. Mackay goaled. 25-0. . . ■ ' Early in the second spell Old Boys attacked in a loose rush, and,1 Mackay failing to take the ball, f rushed over the line, where Fordham scored a good try. Malcolm goaled. 25-5. Compelling 'Varsity to force, Old Boys continued the rally. Gibson bullocked his way along and passed to Menzies, who scored in the corner. Malcolm kicked a beautiful goal. 2S-10. The reverse livened 'Varsity, and, Bryden sending the ball out, Jackson made a great dash, to be tackled well by Faber on the line. Again 'Varsity secured and Murray, sent the ball to Aitken, to Malfroy, who was tackled on the corner flag by Malcolm. He had ■ his reward shortly afterwards, picking up neatly after Aitken had been grassed and scoring behind the posts. Aitken goaled. 30-10. _ M'Call, Old Boys' best forward, at this stage had to go off with an injured shoulder. Gibson was prominent immediately afterwards, and when held up passed to Jones, who went over. Malcolm again kicked a good goal. 3015. 'Varsity scored soon afterwards through Old Boye overrunning. Maloney. passed to Scott, who let Jackson have it to score on the corner. 33-15. Jackson and the forwards were in a passing rush which finished in Scott scoring. 36-15. A good follow-up gave Thomas a try, but his kick, a good one, missed. 39-15. There was no further score.
