BERHAMPORE DEFEAT WELLINGTON.
Between Berhampore and Wellington thea-e was a fairly well-contested encounter at D uppa-stireet, the former, however, giving more finish to their efforts and piling up a score of 20 points as against their opponents' 3. Although conditions ware best suited to forward play, the backs on both sides, moTe. particularly those of Berhampore, took a prominent part in the game, and indulged in movements which enlivened the spectators. Passing rushes by Berhampore were at times very neatly executed, and it was only sound tackling by Wellington that prevented a larger score. .Wellington were ' given plenty of chances, but could not produce the effort necessary to turn them to good account. Early after the start, Hiek'ling was held up at the comer flag, and temporarily incapacitated. Further pressure by Berhampore met with better result, Mauatt ploughing his way through from tight play between the forwards, and scoring in a good position. He converted.the try, and a little later added three points by means of a penalty goa.l. 8-0. Wellington thereupon retaliated, good play, by the backs developing into a forward rush, from which Butcher was able to get across. The kick failed. 8-3. Directly afterwards Walters initiated a nice rush by the Berhampore backs. Hiclding finally centred, and was quioklv on the ueeno, smothering a relieving kick, trn.il »cor.
ins. The kick was unsuccessful. 11-3. Just after half-time- Mouatt had two kicks at goal, the second, from a mark out near the touch-line, being successful. 14-3. Wellington made advances in subsequent play without result. ■ From one of their attacks Brook (Berhampore's full-back) sent the" leather well downfield. Matheson followed up, and tackled his opponent, before the latter had time to kick, and Brook, who had also come' on the scene, was left to score an easy try. There was no conversion. 17-3. Wellington soon had an opportunity—a penalty in front, of the goal— but G. Frater failed to send the ball above the men on the mark. Following some fairly even play, Berhampore again placed Wellington's line' in danger. In the scramble to get across, Wellington were penalised, and Mouatt added another goal. That was the1 filial score. Berhanipore; 20; Wellington, 3. .
Mr. R. Fordyoe was the referee.
