IN WET WEATHER

The weather to-day was unfavourable for football, rain falling constantly.

MARIST VICTORIOUS. OVER

ORIENTAL.

Playing at Kilbirnie, Marist were victorious over ' Oriental by 13 points to 8. The game was witnessed by a crowd of about 1500, and was interesting to watch. Oriental were without the services of Gair, and A. Gilfchrist played at wing-forward, doing good work.' Marist kicked off, and a nice rush on the part of the backs followed. Creed essayed a pot, but screwed the ■ball too much, and missed. " Play changed to the Marist end, where Oriental got the ball from tho ruck. Adams secured, and passed to Scott, who beat Murphy, and got across. Adams failed to convert. Oriental 3, Marist 0. .Markham tried to cleur from the twenty-five, but was collared before he could get his kick in. Moffit secured, and threw, the ball across to Scott on the wing, but the lastnamed failed to hold it. The game now took a dramatic change. Marist got the upper hand,' but faulty passing among the backs lost several chances. At length Creed . received the ball, made /a short/ dash, ' and scored at the corner. Murphy converted. Marist 5,. Oriental 3. Oriental had the advantage in the forwards, and a strong rush to the Marist line ended in Momt-having no difficulty in falling on the ball. Adams converted. Oriental 8, Marist 5. Marist kept Oriental defending for the remainder of the spell, and had hard luck in not being able to score. Tancred had one chance, but hesitated, and the opportunity was lost. Markliam did a power of good work, and it was not his fault that the Greens were unable to score.

When the second spell opened there was a lot of solid work in the Marist twenty-five, and Markha'm and Mahoney were conspicuous in efforts to relieve the pressure. Markham eventually came through in great style, and was well supported. In front of the goal Oriental were penalised, owing to A. Gilchrist holding on to the ball. Murphy; took the kick and goaled. '8 all. Marist a few minutes later came within an ace of scoring. TancreS got away at half-way, and in the Oriental twenty-five passed to Crotty, who sent to Troy. The lastnamed failed to receive, and Oriental forced. Had Crotty gone on he must have scored. Oriental retaliated with a strong attack, and Marist if ere kept defending hard. Adams took a'penalty kick, but missed, although the attempt was a good one. A wild pass to Mahoney by Carmody spoiled a likely loolang movement' among the Marist backs, but the Greens kept up the attack, and from the loose in front of the goal Troy secured and scored a dashing try. Murphy converted. Marist 13, Oriental 8. This was the final score. Mr. T. Fletcher was referee.
