METHODS OF VALUATION

A statement that instructions had been given that valuations were not to exceed pre-war values was brought under the notice of the Prime Minister by Mr. B. M'Callum (Wairau) in the House oJ Representatives on Friday. Mr. M'Callum asked if the Prime Minister, as head of the Department, had assentedl to this doctrine.

Tho Prims Minister said that lie had referred the statement to the ValuerGeneral, who stated that during the early stages of the war an instruction was issued that values should be kept at the pre-war standard. At that time it was not thought that va-lues would increase as they did. In fact, it was thought that there would be a, drop. That instruction became inoperative after 1916, from which time till the termination of the war values were increased temporarily to market prices: Since the termination of the war the values had been maintained at the market standard.
