BRIGHTER PROSPECTS IN AUCKLAND.

(BT TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.)

AUCKLAND, 10th October. Prospects for a resumption of the city gas supply arc-now much brighter-than towards the end of last -week. The President of the Board of Tiade arranged for as much, coal as possible to be released for the company from cargoes due here this week. A total of 5900 tons is expected from Newcastle, and the Westport Company will receive 800 tons. The Newcastle coal is expected to-morrow night.

The loss of coal to the community, through the Waikato strikes amounts to 34,000 tons, as follows:—Huntly and 1 Rotowaro, idle twenty working days, 20,000 tons; Pukemiro, idle -twenty-eight days, 14,000 tons.

The trams will resume running in tho morning, but the continuance of the service is dependent'on regular supplies of coal.
