DATUM PRINCIPLE
BRITISH MINERS' OPINIONS DIVERSE RECOMMENDATIONS, {tmirid . pitisg asbooiamoh.—coptbioh*.) fADSTftALIAS-NBW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.) LONDON", 6th. October. The Yorkshire Miners' Council decided to recommend its members to vote against th.9 "datum-line" scheme. The Cleveland miners' executive decided to recommend acceptance of the principle. [Several inquiries have been, made as to what the term "datum-line" means. It is a borrowed surveyors' term. A ■.'datum" is literally something "given," or "fixed," and implies a standard. * In »ts original use & datum line is some level chosen for convenience, from-which heights or depths can readily be measured, as in laying out a railway, a road, or other work. Such a line is quite arbitrary. One datum-line, actually quite arbitrary but serving as a ■world-wide standard, is "sea-level." In the mining settlement proposals, the; datum line is simply a standard output, and it is suggested that an increase in the national coal output shall give the miners a higher rate of pay per shift.]
