ISLAND BAY LIFE-SAVING AND SURF CLUB
Hie Island Bay Life-saving and Surf Uluo opened its season on Saturday, and although the weather was not all that could bo desired a fair crowd was on the boaoh. The club president {Colonel J. G. Hughes, C.M.G., D.5.0.), in a- briof speech, introduced the Mayor, Mr. J P. Luke, M.P., who declared the season open. My. \Vriß_t, M.P., also spoke The result of tho ladies' swimming race of 50 yards was: Mrs. Bosher 1, Miss L. Skinner 2, and Miss Maud Allan 3. An, interolub r*ce for men resulted in a win for Mr. Gamble, with Mr. Patterson second, the finishes of both races were very oloae. Mr. J. Bruce acted as handicapper. The ladies of tho club provided rcfreslmaents during the afternoon, and the children wore not forgotten, being especially cared for. It is the intention of tho committee to carry on a swimming and life-saving programme of. events right through. the season, and as the club is in a very flourishing condition, given good weather this season should be a record one.
