RAILWAY MEN
AN EMPHATIC PROTEST.
(BY TELEGRAPH.—I'RKSS ASSOCIATION.)
HAWERA, Isth December
The Hawera branch of the Engineers, Firemen, and Cleaners' Association carried a motion entering an emphatic protest against the action of the Government in introducing a system whereby they allege weekly earnings aro to be considerably reduced, and calling on the executive to take what steps they deem necessary to secure a living wage. PALMERSTON NORTH, 15th Dec. The serious unrest in the railway- service in this district is exemplified by a series of motions passed by the local branch of the A.S.R.S. to-night. A typical one follows:—"That this branch ask the general secretary wha> steps, if any, are being taken by the Executive Council, to enforce our demands for a living wage for our members and their dependents. We ' wish the executive to understand that our demands are urgent and necessary, and that we are prepared to take steps, however drastic, to obtain relief from the conditions now existing, if the Department do not immediately drop the 'go-slow' policy in connection with the increase in our wages, long overdue." There is much talk of a strike during the holidays CHRISTCHURCH, 15th Dec. At a meeting of the North Canterbury branch of the Railway Officers' Institute, the following resolutions were carried unanimously: "That this branch is entirely dissatisfied with the 1919 D 3 owing to the unfair treatment meted out to deserving members and the salaries shown not being in accordance with/the schedule to the Classification Act, that the D 3 absolutely fails to carry out the General Manager's promise to the institute that members would receive liberal treatment, and that the executive be telegraphed to take immediate action."
