PROTEST FROM BULLER

(BY IBIEORAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WESTPORT, 16th August. ' At a meeting to-night of the Buller Branch of the Second Division League the following motion was passed: —

"(1) That members of the Buller Second Division League desire to voice their emphatic protest against the rumoured action of the Government to call tip children of nineteen years to fight the Empire's battles, instead of facing the position squarely and making adequate provisions by equitable taxation to enable Second Division men to take their place among the men of the Empire with the feeling that politicians safe at home in New Zealand have done their duty in providing for tho wives and children left behind. (2) That the Government use the power it possesses to ascertain the source of the rumours of its alleged intention and take to task the persons responsible for such rumours. (3) That this meeting of the Second Division League regrets the failure of the Government to carry out the promise made to the deputation from the Second Division League Conference in reference to arranging for the medical examination of the Second Division men, and requests the Government immediately to make the necessary arrangements and carry out the promise." One speaker took strong exception to the way in which men were evading military service by. getting work at mines, and thought the companies should acquaint the Defence Minister of .the position. Too great power, he thought, was given to a few men to say that certain men were essential to an industry.
