COST OF LIVING

PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL

RESOLUTION.

At last evening's meeting of the Petone Borongh Council, on the motion of Councillor Churchouse, seconded by Councillor Newland, it was decided to support the action of the Napier Borough Council, which has passed a resolution to the effect that the Government should control the food supplies of the Dominion.

Speaking to the motion, the mover stated that the councils should have taken up the matter long ago, and brought pressure to bear on tho Government. The country ought, at this time, to use all its resources in the winning of the war, and the ordinary trade systems should be done away with. All foodstuffs should be controlled by the State, instead of being hoarded 1 up for profiteering. Tho stores were bursting at the present time with butter, mutton, and cheese, which, was being retailed at exorbitant prices.

.Councillor Newlaod said at the present time the Government had made a present to traders of thousands of pounds through allowing them to raise the price of tea and cigarettes at present in stock.

Councillor Cox and the Mayor supported the motion, which was canied unanimously.
