Rain fell at Trentiiam Overnight; and thefe wer'g several goad slidWefs this morning after training bperatiehs ebiii= mehced: The" Outside of the ceUrse proper was open; aiid the goings which wag soft;! cut Up quifeklyi

■i. W; Lowe had his lot out shortly after daylight: Mascot trotted tt roiand ort the tall and afterwards galloped home a few furlongs at the end of a circuit en the grass, Seadown was going better than Johnny Walker in a spui'fe over four furlongs. LoWe informed me he did not know which' members of his team would start in the Thompson Handicap. It is reported that OhakHvana and Seadown will run, and A. Reed and G. Clarka are named as the respective riders. ■ Murray Hobba put in an appearance with Mr. W. Q. Stead's team, consisting of Shrill, Saeanof, Kilboy, Cheloma, Bayonne, Sweet Corn, Killem, Good Day, Killard, Wilflinn, and Kilkee. They had been worked at Riccarton on Saturday morning, and to-day were restricted to pipe-openers. Devotion did a round at three-quarter pace. She was ridden by C. Reed ; who will pilot Mr. Bidwill's representative in the Thompson Handicap. The Toff hit out well in a gallop over two rounds, and .appeared to revel in ■the soft going. .-* Koesian was sent five furlongs at a solid pace, and other members of R. D. O'Donnell's team were out. ■'.■..!.

: .' Nystad and Battle Song went six furlongs. The former was always going better, but neither was at top. G. Clarke will ride the Great Easter Handicap winner in the Railway Handicap. Chortle and Multiplication, ridden by S. Reid separately, hit out well, and finished up their tasks pleasingly! Multaine (with a light boy up) also did a round on the grass. Vagabond; trotted on the sand track. > . . '

Croesus,- with trainer M'Cracken in the saddle, was not extended.

Heeltap (F. Porter) and Teka (E. Manson) galloped five furlongs -in .company. The former, who is reported to be a good mudlark, registered lmin ssec for the distance.

The owner of Gazique motored out to see his horse v.ork. • The son of Gazeley went five furlongs alone, taking 52sec from the half-mile post. He will be ridden by F. B. Jones (who was in the saddle when he won the Templelon Handicap at Riccarton), and promises to be one of the favourites for the Railway:

Cuthbert Morse sent the other Gisborne representative, Multifual, five furlongs, and he put up time equalling Heeltap's gallop. He will be ridden in the Thompson Handicap by W. Young, who rode him when he won the Gisborne Cup, and also at Napier Park. If' the going is heavy on the day he will probably come into favour, as she has previously demonstrated at Trentham that he is at home in soft going, having won the Parliamentary Handicap there last July. Miss Delaval, . Pacific Slope, Prince Delaware, and a number of local horses wero out before breakfast. Most of the horses engaged at the meeting have raced recently, and visiting trainers are delaying their departure from home until later than usual. F. Davis, with five horses, is expected tonight. R. J. Mason and H. Cutts are due from South to-morrow.
