MAGISTRATE'S COURT
To-day's sitting* of the Magistrate's Court was presided over' by Mr. L. G. Reid, S.M. Two first-offending inebriates received the usual lenient treatment. Phillis ' Mellis, who has a decided objection to such institutions as Salvation Army homes, was alleged to have escaped from the institution mentioned. Defendant made various excuses for her conduct, but the Magistrate considered that it would be in her interests if she were detained somewhere. The order was accordingly made that she should be Bent to gaol . for one !month, a.nd lie sent back to tho Salvation Army | Homo at the termination of the sentence. \ . ' A trivial offence was disclosed in the case of Thomas Paul, who was charged with assaulting a man named Claud James Cos. A fine of 10s was imposed, the alternative of payment being three days' imprisonment. "This woman is a menace to soldiers," 6tated Inspector Hendrey in referring to Margaret Elizabeth Brown, who was charged with loitering in Tara-naki-street for the purposes of prostitution, contrary to the provisions of the War Begulalkons Act. The defendant asked for a chance, but her request was answered by a sentence of one mouth's imprisonment. Tho woman did not remember using obscene language, but for it she was convicted and a fine of K)s, with tho alternative of fourteen days' imprisonment, was imposed. A young, man named Alfred Hansen, who deserted from an oversea steamer, was sent to gaol for one month. In the -case of Joseph Brown; charged with escaping from the military prison at Trenthara, the accused was ordered j to be handed, over to the military au- | thoritiee. " *
