FORT INSPECTION,

Although little is heard at the present time of the work which is being done by that portion of our Defence Forces which is mobilised for the purpose of manning the harbour defences, this important branch of the defence system is not being neglected. The work of keeping the forts manned and of training the units detailed for this duty goes on uninterruptedly, and the men who are watching the gates of the city are alert day and night. Last evening the first compulsory parade for the New Year of No. 5 Company Garrison Artillery unit of the Coast Defence troops was held at Fort Ballance. Major I. L. Sleeman, Director of Military Training, being present. The inspecting officer, was' Col. G. F. C. Campbell, Coast Defence Commander, and he was accompanied by his staff ofiicer (Major Sandle). Lieut.-Col. Courtney and the company officers were in command of the parade. The usual routine of manning the fort For action was carried out. The "enemy" was represented by, the steamer Janie Seddon, with a Hongkong target in tow, and the search light was conccntiated on this target during the exercises.
