PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY

The annual report of the Philosophical Society, to bo presented at the annual meeting this evening, states that the session ha 6 been one of considerable activity, and that a number of valuable papers have been read before the society. The society has set up a committet! to consider the best means of oigauising scientific and industrial research The astronomical, technological, and geological sections have been very active during the. session, and a number of.'technical papers have been read before them. Referenoe is made to the severe loss to the society in the death of its former president, Mr. Thomas King, and to the valuable gift from Miss Jessie King, of' the King Equatorial Telescope and astronomical books. The Roll of Honour of this society claims 17 names, of whom Lieut. Val Blake was Wiled in action.;. The committee appointed to provide a memorial to the late Mr A. Hamilton reports that arrangements' are now well forward for the erections of a suitable monolith and tablet over the grave at Russell, Bay of Islands. The statement of receipts and payments shows that the society invested £150 in the War Loan, and including this amount has a balance 'of £273 10s 7d, and in addition £48' 8s 2d is available for expenditure on ■ the library. The society will elect its president and council for next year. ' By courtesy of the Tourist Department, the fine film of "A Tour of the Southern Alps" will be shown. Mr. H. Hamilton will describe a crab-eating seal. Further notes on New Zealand Bird Song will be given by Mr. 'J. Anderson, .while a paper on' "Vegetation," by Dr Cockayne, F.R.S., and Mr. B. 0. Aston, F.L.C., F.C.S., and on "Brachiopods," by Dr. J. Allan Thomson, will be taken as read.
