SERIOUS CHARGE

This morning in the Magistrate's Court Donald Poison, who saw- service in the South African war, where he gained the D.5.0., was charged with- committing an indecent assault on a girlvaged sixteen years. After hearing the evidence; the Magistrate (Mr. W. Gi Riddell, S.M.) stated that, although in his opinion the case was not a strong one, he was not prepared to dismiss it at the present stage. The facts were such that a jury should decide on a conviction or acquittal. The case was a somewhat unusual one, in that the girl concerned had turned sixteen years, but was mentally defective. The accused, who was represented by Mr. H. F. O'Leary, pleaded not guilty, and . was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Bail was allowed.
