PERSONAL MATTERS
«* Mr. Justice Stringer arrived in Wellington by the Maori from Lyttelton this morning. Mr James Metson, assistant at the Thames High School, has been appointed first assistant at the Wanganui Technical College. A Press Association message from Napier- announces the death of. Mrs J. B. Fielder, who arrived in Auckland in 1863, and in Napier in 1565. The late Mrs. Fielder celebrated her golden wedding last year. Sergt. J. Wood, who died on the Pateena while coming up from Christchurch on Saturday . morning last, was for many years a prominent figure in military circles in Dunedin. He was for twelve years in the Otago Hussars, and for fifteen years a- member of tho St. John Ambulance Society, of which he was superintendent for four years. Two of his sons are members of 'the Expeditionary Forces. Eulogistic reference to, the work done by Mr. C. W. Palmer, the late secretary of the Wellington branch of the Navy League, was made by the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) and Mr. J. B. Harcourt at the annual meeting of the league last evening. Two or threo other speakers, including the Hon. A. M. Myers, also made special mention of Mr. Palmer's services, attention being drawn to the interest he had aroused among the school children as far as the navy was concerned. Replying, Mr. Palmer said that, although no longer secretary of the branch, ho hoped to do all he could for tho league. He thanked the speakers for ithe kindly 'references they had made to him. During the year two prominent employers of labour passed away, and will be greatly missed by .those with whom they came into contact in the business life of the Dominion (states the * annual report of the Employers' Federation). While Mr. J. J; Craig (Craig and Co., Ltd., Auckland) had not oE recent years taken an active part in the work of the federation, his firm has always been closely connected with the Auckland Employers' Association, of which he was a strong supporter. Mr. K. 'F. England, Christchurch, took a great interest in -the work of the Canterbury Employers' Association, of wliich he was for severalyears a member of the executive. On different occasions he attended the an-n-ual meetings of the federation, and was always very active in connection withi any work for the benefit of employers of labour. The sympathy of the federation is extended to the members- of the families and the friends of those who have thus passed away.
