EDUCATION BOARD
The Wellington Education Board (which now embraces the Marlborough Board) held its monthly meeting to-day. There were present: Hon. J.- G. W. Aitken (chairman), Messrs. W. Allan, R. A. Wright, M.P., W. H. Field, M.P., T. Forsyth, A. W. Hogg, T. Moss, E. P. Rishworth, G. London, E. H. Penny, A. Mackay, and J. Kebbell. A letter forwarded to the various headmasters by the Minister of .Education was received from the Minister. The communication asked teachers to report cases of children whom they, deemed to be mentally deficient. In regard to the petition for the establishment of a school at Lower Rive'rlands, the Chairman explained that the matter had been held over in order that •further details might be obtained. An application for. the transfer of the school at Pukekoikoi was granted. Tire Chairman explained that the school was a residential one, and the transfer only meant shifting it from one house. ( to another. The New Zealand Educational Insti- j tute wrote, suggesting that simultaneous meetings of the Education Boards be held, as this would be of great convenience in regard to vacancies and other matters affecting the teachers. The board- discussed the matter briefly and came to the conclusion that the proposal was impracticable. An application -by the Wellington Educational Institute for deduction from teachers' salaries of annual subscriptions to the institute was not acceded to, the Chairman remarking that although they desired to help the institute the proposal wonld be going too far. . - I
