HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT

The Department of Agriculture, Industries, and Commerce has received the following cablegram, dated London,'23rd September, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand. ' (Note. —Quotations, unless otherwise specified, are average market prices on spot).

Meat.—Lower prices are being quoted for Argentine mutton and lamb owing to increasing supplies of Patagonian. There is less demand for ewe mutton, but a good demand for New Zealand lamb. New Zealand mutton, per lb,' B|d ; ewe mutton, B|d ; Argentine mutton, 7Jd; Dutch mutton is in fair supply; heavy-weight mutton, B|d ; light-weight, 10id. New Zealand lamb, 9_d; Argentine lamb, Bj*d. American pork in good demand, 9jd to lid. There are no supplies of New Zealand beef available. Argentine chilled beef, hindquarters, 9§d ; forequarters, 7^d.

■ Butter.—The market closed firm at the advanhe. There is a restricted demand at present prices. Danish, salted, per cwt., 200s to 2045; Irish creamery, 188s to 190s; unsalted, 190s to 1925; Canadian, salted, 186s to 188s ; New -Zealand salted, 190s to 1925; Argentine, unsalted, 188s; States creamery, salted, 180s to 184s.

Cheese.—The market is quiet but steady, generally in sympathy with cheese .position in Canada, where continued heavy buying on account of Government is reported. Canadian, white, 105s !to 107s; coloured, 105s to 107s; Ehglish .cheddar, 114s to 116s; New Zealand, the market* is steady, with fair demand at ' current prices. White,' 104s to 106s; •coloured, 104s to 106s; States flats, white, 102s to 105s.

: Hemp.—The market is quiet but firm. ;Good fair N-Z. hemp, per ton, £50; I fair, £48; Government graded fair Manila, £52; coarse, £49 10s; October-De-cember shipment, good fair N.Z., £49 110s; fair, £47 10s; Government graded fair Manila, £51 10s; coarse, £48 10s. The output of hemp at Manila for the week ending last Saturday was 23,000 bales.

Wheat.—The market is quiet; prices are slightly weaker. 'Canadian arrived, 66s 6d; October-November shipment, 655; Australian, shipment in October, 68s.

; Oats.—The market is .-quiet, but steady, Argentine, on spot, 325.
