TAXI-DRIVERS' POSITION

TO THE EDITOR.

Sir, —I am the wife of a taxi-driver, and can't understand why these councillors have such a set against us. Talk about abolishing the Featherston-street stand because carbide is strewn on the street and empty tins left about—well, what can the men do? I know of.one who has suggested a'■ refuge bin being placed handy for the men. My husband tells me that a generator lasts from four to five hours; then, has to be replenished. It seems to me these councillors do a lot of talking without thinking. If our lights are too dim or out we are fined; if they are too bright we are fined. What are we to do? Have these councillors ever had to earn a living for their wives and families, and been harassed . like we are ? The first Wellington taxi was on the Featherstonstreet stand seven and a-hali years ago, and up to the allotting of different stands there was practically no trouble with the men. The men who had, hi my opinion, earned the right to keep their' places on that stand were told they had no right, and must battle I around from one place to another. We are paying almost double for petrol noAv to what we were six years ago, yet we can't raise our price. I have more to pay for food and clothing, and for my little ones, too. It's hard enough for a. working man to keep his wife and family decently, without undue interference. Why should we always be pub down as an irresponsible- lot. Let th:?n give us a chance. —I am. etc., MRS. TAXI. 14th August.
