MOTOR RELIABILITY TRIAL

» (IT TELEGRAPH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.) NAPIER, 17th October. The Napier Motor-cycle Club held its annual reliability v trial on Saturday, under favourable conditions, the course being from Napier to' Waikare and back, a distance of eighty-four miles. Eighteen competitors entered. On the outward journey nearly all the riders experienced trouble in negotiating the Devil's Elbow, a famous bend on the Wairoa-road, the recent rains having left the road in a very muddy condition. The winners were as under :—: — Open Class j first to receive Sutton and Balfour Cup, and purse of 10 soys. — G. Powell, 7-10 h.p. Excelsior, 92.71 points, 1440z petrol, 1; W. J. Stevens, 3£ h.p. Overseas, 92.5 points, 1240z petrol, 2; A. G. Sutton, 3£ h.p. Humber, 92.44 points, 1260z petrol, 3. Private Owners' Class ; first to receive trophy valued at £3 3s. — H. Bate, 3£ h.p. Humber, 82.12 points, 1540z petrol, 1. This event was in reality won by G. Powell, but as he had already secured one prize he was, according to the conditions of the trial, unable to take another. Light-weight Class; first to receive trophy valued at £1 Is. — F. Springfield, 2£ h.p. Connaught, 1. The rider was a mere boy, but he was the only one to finish. After the trial, when working out .the petrol consumption, the officials discovered certain alterations in the construction of a tank, and disqualified the rider.
