LOWER HUTT'S WATER SUPPLY
■»• Mention is made in the Engineer's report, submitted to the Lower Hutt Borough Council last evening, of an accident to an hydraulic pump nsed in connection with the borough's water supply. He states : — "One of the hydraulic pumps of sewage lifts in the Randwickroad septic tank suddenly failed on Friday afternoon. These lifts are peculiarly constructed. There is a fixed plunger and a fixed cylinder, and between these, over the plunger and inside the cylinder, works the ram that pumps the sewage. It was the head of the fixed plunger that came off, carrying with it a gunmental jacket that is the only visible part of the plunger. Arrangements are now being made to repair this." Fortunately, concludes the Erigineer (Mr. J. Roche), there was somebody in the station at the time of the failure, and, through his promptitude in cutting off the water, he prevented the reservoir from being emptied.
