PATRIOTIC SOCIETY MEETING OF EXECUTIVE.

A meeting of the general executive of the New Zealand Patriotic Society was held last night, Mr. CM. Luke presiding. A letter from Mt. T. W. Hislop, addressed to the president (Mr. H. G. Hill) was placed before the meeting. It was as under : — "My friends and I, who waited upon the Victoria College Council, were greatly disappointed Wiat you and your friends of the Patriotic League did not carry out your^intention to also wait on the council at the same time. Probably your absence was accounted for by your not having the support of your committee. If you in your representative capacity still desire to have the matter of Professor yon Zedh'tz's appointment discussed, my friends and I are willing to arrange with you to hold a meeting, say, on Monday night, in the Concert Hall, and we will pay half the expense." The secretary (Mr. J. Lewis) said that the council' had been informed that, as a definite statement had been made by the Prime Minister in connection with the matter, the society did not consider it necessary to go on with the deputation. The letter was referred back to Mr. Hill to deal with as he' thought fit. application was received from the secretary of St. John Ambulance Association for a donation of £100 from the society's funds. The association had . (said the letter) been asked by His Excellency the Governor to contribute about half the beds on the Hospital Ship No. 2, together with requisites. Hence the application. It was resolved to grant the donation asked for. Later in the evening Mr. J. Macintosh questioned the right of the meeting to grant the donation. The society was, he contended, a. body established for the purpose of raising funds, but not for the distribution of funds. He moved ' to rescind the resolution and delay the matter until such time as the trustees were appointed, "which would be almost ' immediately. This was agreed to after some discussion, and on the motion of Mr. E. J. Colley, it was decided that a meeting of the executive be called for 4th October for the purpose of appointing trustees to deal with the funds of the society, and that the secretary advise the St. John Ambulance Association that the association's application will be submitted to the trustees with the request that the matter be favourably considered. This was seconded and carried unanimously.
