BRICKLAYERS DISPUTE
ARBITRATION COURT AWARD. An award was filed to-day in the Wellington bricklayers 1 dispute, which was recently heard before the Arbitration Court. A memorandum attached to the award, and signed by the President (Mr. Justice Stringer), reads as follows : " The only •substantial question referred to the Court in this dispute was as to the minimum rate of wages, This has been fixed at Is 7£d per hour, which the Court thinks is fair and reasonable, having regard to the intermittent nature of the work, and the frequent periods of lost time resulting therefrom." It is provided that the hours of work shall consist of forty-four hours per week, and that in no case shall work commence before 8 a.m. or continue after 5 p.m. All journeymen bricklayers shall be paid Is 7^d an hour, with time and a-quarter for special work specified in the award. " permanent hand " shall mean workers employed continuously for eight weeks. Overtime shall be paid for at the rate of time and a-quarter for the first two hours, time and a-half thereafter up to 10 p.m., and double time after that. Wages are to be paid weekly. Special ternis are made for suburban and country work, both of which are specified. Wages for apprentices are fixed a» follows : — First year, 10s ,• second year, 15s j third year, 20a j fourth year, 30s j fifth year, 40s. Otner provisions embodying the employment of apprentices are included. Preference to unionists is granted, and the award will come into force on 12th July, 1915, and continue for three years.
