SWIMMING

SEASON OPENED AT PETONE Fine weather and good conditions generally favoured the ne\v]y-formed Petone Swimming and Life-saving Club for the opening of its sea son on Saturday afternoon. There was an attendance of nearly 1000, and the season was declared open by the Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Esvan), who expressed a wish that the club s eilorts would be crowned with success. Mr. G. S. Hill, chairman of the Wellington Swimming Centre, was also present, and gave an interesting discourse on lite-saving. An exhibition of life-saving, given by Messrs. J. H Kober and J. Duffy prior to the sports! was also much appreciated. Tn addition to the latter, a lifeline display was given by a team from the Maranui Surf and Life-saving Club. The Petone Municipal Band was in attendance and played selections throughout the afternoon. The races resulted as follow: — Primary Schoolboys 1 Race (33yds).— Scott 1, Young 2. Time, 33 l-ssec. High Schoolboys (33yds). —Thomas 1, Burd 2. Time, 29 2-ssec. Club Maiden Race (33yds).— First heat: Price 1, Tancred 2, Smith 3. Time. 27sec. Second heat: Elbe 1, Thomas 2, King 3. Time, 26 2-ssec. Final: Price 1. Tancred 2, Smith 3. Time, 25 2-ssec. Neatest Dive (open).— Saunders (Thorndon) 1, Bowden (Wellington) 2. Open Race (50yds).— First heat: Farnell (ssec), 1 ; M'Cavlie (scr), 2 ; Lyford (2sec), 3. Time. 39 l-Bsec. Second heat: Wickens (ssec), 1; Linden (ssec). 2; Saunders (6sec). 3. Time, 36sec. Final: Wickens 1, M'Carlie 2, Farnell 3. Time, 36sec. 100 Yards (open event).— Sheehy (15sec), 1; M'Carlie (lsec), 2; Farneil (12sec), 3. Time, 86sec. This event was the race of the day, Sheehy winning by a few feet, whilst inches separated the next five competitors. Club Handicap (50yds).— Riddell (Bsec), 1 ; King (Bsec), 2 ; Smith and Tancred, dead-heat, 3. Time, 40sec. After the sports the visitors were the guests of the club at an enjoyable evening.
