The High Commissioner reports as follows to the Prime Minister :— LONDON, Ist February, 6.55 p.m. Paris reports : Yesterday the artillery duel was particularly lively in the whole of the northern region. South-east of Ypres a German infantry attack on the trenches north of the canal was stopped by combined artillery and infantry fire. On the whole of the Aisne front, the Allies' batteries demolished the enem"y's trenches. In the Champagne, north-east of Mesnil-les-Hurlus, we strengthened our organisation in a small wood captured on Saturday. The Argonne is calm, and the enemy appear to have suffered severely in the recent fighting.
