FARMERS' UNION REQUEST
CHRtSTCHURCH, This Day. The North Canterbury Farmers' Union has decided to approach the Government to have the fixed price for wheat removed so far as the new crop is concerned, and to ask that the world's market should fix the standard price for the Dominion.
Bearing the effects of a terrible experience in a terrific cyclone t tho Italian ship Caterina F., which left Newcastle on 19th November for Antofagasta, has returned to that port. Tho storm caused an. exceptional amount of damage to the ship, all the sails being either torn to ribbons or completely blown away, and four boats lost. To make matters worse, the cargo shifted, causing the vessel to take a dangerous list. Four of the crew were injured, one of these (Campagna Nicasio) having a remarkable escape from death. A huge wave dashed him against the side of the ship, with the result that his left leg was broken and his right arm badly injured. Tho next sea carried him overboard, and a huge "wave caught him on its crest and washed him back on to the vessel. While on this sea he was carried well above the deck, and somehow managed to cling to the shrouds on the starboard side of the foremast 18ft above tho deck. No one could go to his assistance without certain loss of life, and he remained in that position for five hours. As soon as possible the captain set the leg, and upon arrival in port the patient was moved to the hospital. Messrs. E. Johnston and Co. will hold a sale of household furniture ana* appointments at their rooms, 157, Lambton-quay, to-morrow, commencing at 1 o'clock. On Thursday they will hold a sale of English boots and ehoea at their room*, wniinenc-'Ug-itUe'ctak.
